Forest City might not make national headlines, but this thriving community punches well above its weight. You’ll find an award-winning school system, a beautiful liberal arts university (Waldorf), a stunning performing arts center, excellent medical facilities, and a downtown that still looks like downtown should—walkable, friendly, and filled with locally-owned businesses.
This is a place where people wave at strangers, where the local coffee shop knows your order by day two, and where you can actually see stars at night. It’s authentic small-town Iowa at its finest.
Winnebago Industries has called Forest City home since 1958, and the relationship between company and community runs deep. The Winnebago campus—what locals call “the most productive 60 acres in North Iowa”—employs over 3,000 people and attracts RV enthusiasts from around the world for factory tours.
This means Forest City has the infrastructure and hospitality of a much larger town while maintaining its small-community charm. You’ll find surprisingly good restaurants, well-maintained roads and facilities, and a genuine welcome for travelers.
The Winnebago River flows through Forest City, creating a ribbon of natural beauty through the area. The river valley supports abundant wildlife, offers excellent fishing and paddling, and provides the scenic backdrop that makes The Lodge so special.
The 26-mile Winnebago River Water Trail passes right through town, offering Class I paddling suitable for all skill levels. In spring and early summer, the river flows clear and cool through lush greenery. In fall, the wooded riverbanks explode with color.
Weather and What to Pack
Spring (April-May): Forest City comes alive with wildflowers, migrating birds, and fresh green leaves. Temperatures range from 50-70°F. Perfect for hiking and early-season golf. Layers are key. Mornings and evenings can be cool (40-50°F) while afternoons warm nicely (60-70°F). Pack a light jacket, comfortable walking shoes, and clothes you can layer.
Summer (June-August): Warm and pleasant with average highs in the upper 70s to mid-80s. Humidity is lower than you’d find further south. Ideal for all outdoor activities, from canoeing to festivals. Casual and comfortable is the rule. Temperatures in the 70s-80s, occasional 90s. Bring shorts, t-shirts, sunscreen, and bug spray for evening walks. A light sweater for air-conditioned restaurants.
Fall (September-October): Many consider this the best time to visit. Spectacular autumn colors, comfortable temperatures (60-70°F), and harvest season throughout Iowa. The woods around The Lodge put on an incredible show. Comfortable walking shoes are essential. Most visitors spend time outdoors exploring our grounds and the area. Casual dress is appropriate everywhere in Forest City—we’re not fancy folks.
Winter (November-March): Yes, it gets cold—often below freezing with occasional snow. But winter in Forest City has its own magic: pristine snow-covered landscapes, excellent cross-country skiing, cozy fireplaces, and the peaceful quiet that only winter brings. Dress warmly! Temperatures often below freezing, with wind chill making it feel colder. If you’re here for outdoor activities, bring insulated layers, warm coat, hat, and gloves. The Lodge is cozy and warm inside.
